The fall of Shaw Brothers in the middle of the decade didn't help matters either as they produced many of the best / craziest / most interesting genre films of the entire decade, like Bewitched, The Boxer's Omen, Seeding of a Ghost and others. Not that some of these aren't highly enjoyable, but it definitely wore out its welcome by the time 1990 rolled around.
